Hainan Meilan International Airport (HMIA) is located Southeast of Haikou, the Capital city of Hainan Province. The airport is 25 kilometers from downtown
Haikou and was officially opened on the 25th May 1999.
On 18th Nov, 2002, with 470 million Yuan of registered capital, "Hainan Meilan International Airport Co.; Ltd" was listed for transactions on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK). Major shareholders are including Haikou Meilan International Ltd; Hainan Airline Joint-stock Limited Company; HNA Group Ltd and Oriental Patron Resources Investment Limited.
Presently, HMIA runs both aeronautical business and non-aeronautical business. The aeronautical business includes the provision providing grounding services for airlines and passengers. Non-aeronautical business includes the leasing of commercial and aviation business spaces within the terminal building; operating the parking lot and retail shops with both duty free and non-duty free products and selling advertisement spaces inside and outside the terminal.
As a trunk-line of domestic airport, HMIA is covering an area of 583 hectares. The flight areas facilities meet the 4E standards as required by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and is designed to service the landing requirement of large aircrafts, such as: Boeing 747-400. Additionally, auxiliary facilities, including parking apron and services infrastructure, also meet the requirement of international level.
With six years continued growth, HMIA has served 7.02 million passengers in 2005 and become the top 10 largest airport within China. Direct connections are available from

Macau , and nine are in international destinations.
In order to meet the requirements of an increasing number of airlines and passengers from all around the world, HMIA phase two terminal expansions has completed construction by the end of 2005. Terminal cover an area of 102,000 M² and have the capacity to serve 9.3 million passengers, as well as 135 thousand tons of cargo &mail at present.
As the "
Garden
Airport " in , HMIA has allocated 99.6% of its area to a green belt and this gives the environment of the airport a fresh green and enjoyable appeal to passengers and visitors using the airport.
HMIA is dedicating to improve hardware facilities, as well as to enhance the services standard in all the relevant sectors. From 2002 to 2004, the airport has been successively granted the first prize in "Passenger Evaluation Campaign" for airports with 4-10 million passengers organized by CAAC. In April 2005, HMIA became the 4th airport in to be awarded "
International
Sanitary
Airport " by World Health Organization (WHO).
Since
Hainan
Province was granted the trail of "Open Sky Policy" on 24th March 2003 by General CAAC, HMIA has become the first Chinese airport to receive 3rd; 4th and 5th traffic rights. With further developments in the "Open Sky Policy" implemented and this high recognition by international organizations, HMIA has the potential to become the international aviation hub of
Southern China.
